“Okay” by Em Betts: A Song for When Your Heart is Heavy

One year ago, I wrote these words: “I carry the weight of my heart and the weight of all the things happening in the world very heavily. I feel things deeply. It’s just who I am.”

This is still true. It has always been true.

I first found a name for my struggles with depression and anxiety at the age of 1

4, and I’ve been learning how to cope with them ever since. Some days, it’s easy. Some days, it feels impossible. Yet, having survived a suicide attempt more than four years ago, I have proved to myself that it is—and has always been—possible.

I wrote this song as a reminder, for myself and any others who find themselves struggling, that no matter how bad things seem you can always find a way to cope with them. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s always a way to make things better and that having people there to support you through the most challenging times can make all the difference.

So, here’s to you. May you always remember that whatever happens, you’ll be okay.
